What are Dominant blue eyes?

✨ How Dominant Blue Eyes Differ from Regular Blue Eyes

       Not all blue eyes are created equal. In most cats, blue eyes occur because of coat color genetics — such as the colorpoint (Siamese/Himalayan) pattern or the white (W) or white spotting (S) genes. These genes cause a lack of pigment in the iris, allowing light to scatter and appear blue. However, this type of blue eye is conditional — it only appears in cats with specific coat colors or white areas, and it’s not heritable in isolation.

      By contrast, the Dominant Blue Eye (DBE) gene is independent of coat color. A cat with this gene can have any coat color or pattern — even solid black or brown — and still have vivid blue eyes. The gene is autosomal dominant, meaning just one copy can produce the blue eye effect. It can even lead to odd eyes, where one eye remains blue and the other takes on the cat’s natural color.

In short:

Regular blue eyes come from coat color genes (colorpoint or white).

Dominant blue eyes come from a specific independent gene that creates true pigment absence in the iris — regardless of coat. This independence makes DBE cats exceptionally uncommon and visually striking — a true hallmark of refined breeding and genetic artistry.
